Clark pioneered a multichannel cochlear implant that converts sound into electrical signals delivered through implanted electrodes to the auditory nerve. The physical neuroprosthesis moved cochlear implantation from experimental work to a durable assistive hardware system used to restore hearing for people with severe deafness.
