Harald Hess co-invented photoactivated localization microscopy, an optical system that localizes fluorescent molecules beyond conventional microscope resolution. PALM gave biologists physical imaging instruments capable of viewing cell structures at the nanoscale, opening a much sharper window on disease-related processes.
