The object
HKUST professor Li Zexiang supported the early aerial-control work that became DJI's flight-control technology and is credited alongside Frank Wang in IEEE's engineering history. The hardware enabled stable multicopter platforms used for research, imaging and inspection rather than merely a corporate launch narrative.
What Li did
Co-developed aerial technology and flight-control systems with Frank Wang; Wang was his HKUST student.
Why it matters
IEEE identifies Li and Wang's flight-control systems as a major robotics development whose platforms supported navigation, localization and tracking research.
Living-status check
HKUST's 2026 Robotics Institute directory lists Li as professor and director, a current institutional appointment.
