Lum Guo Zhan

Seed-sized five-function surgical robot

SingaporeEvidence: high confidenceChecked July 2026

Lum Guo Zhan led development of a seed-sized soft surgical robot designed to navigate uneven tissue and perform five wirelessly controlled functions. NTU reports that the reprogrammable magnetic device is aimed at more precise, less invasive treatment and surgery.

01

What Lum did

Led the NTU team developing a wireless miniature soft robot with five surgical functions.

02

Why it matters

The device combines multiple surgical functions in a millimetre-scale soft robot, extending magnetic miniature-robot engineering toward medical intervention; it is an early research-stage system, not a deployed clinical product.

NTU's 26 May 2026 announcement names Lum as the project leader, while NTU's current Robotics Research Centre roster identifies him as an associate professor.
