Maria Skyllas-Kazacos

All-vanadium redox flow battery

AustraliaEvidence: high confidenceChecked July 2026

Maria Skyllas-Kazacos co-invented the all-vanadium redox-flow battery, a rechargeable system that stores energy in liquid vanadium electrolytes held in external tanks. Its separable power and energy capacity made it a consequential hardware option for long-duration grid storage and renewable-energy installations.

01

What Maria did

Co-invented the all-vanadium redox-flow cell and led its development from laboratory cells to kilowatt-scale prototypes.

02

Why it matters

UNSW reports that several gigawatt-hours of all-vanadium flow storage have been installed and credits Skyllas-Kazacos and colleagues with the first cell.

03

Living-status check

UNSW’s current staff profile lists Skyllas-Kazacos as emeritus professor and includes publications from 2025 and 2026.
