Yves Jongen

Compact proton-therapy cyclotron

BelgiumEvidence: high confidenceChecked July 2026

Yves Jongen developed a compact medical cyclotron that made proton radiation therapy more affordable and practical for treatment centres. The accelerator delivers tightly focused proton beams that limit radiation beyond a tumour, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue compared with conventional X-ray therapy.

01

What Yves did

Developed a smaller, lower-cost cyclotron system for clinical proton radiation therapy.

02

Why it matters

Jongen's compact cyclotron lowered the cost barrier to proton therapy and brought precision particle-beam treatment into wider clinical use.
