Burt Rutan designed SpaceShipOne, the rocket-powered crewed spacecraft launched from the White Knight carrier aircraft. Its lightweight composite airframe and air-launch architecture demonstrated a repeatable privately funded route above the recognized boundary of space and won the Ansari X Prize.
