Eric Swanson

Optical coherence tomography imaging system

United StatesEvidence: high confidenceChecked July 2026

Swanson co-invented optical coherence tomography, a light-based instrument for examining tissue layers in unprecedented detail. The hardware combines interferometry, optical scanning and signal detection to image the retina without touching it, making it a lasting manufactured diagnostic platform in ophthalmology and related fields.

What Eric did

Co-invented optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging hardware.

02

Why it matters

NIHF identifies the three-person team as OCT inventors and describes its use across ophthalmology, cardiology and other fields.

03

Living-status check

NIHF announced Eric Swanson as a 2025 inductee on its dated class release, direct evidence of participation in that year.
