The object
Neurosurgeon Hans von Holst co-created the Mips helmet safety concept with Peter Halldin after investigating brain injury and rotational motion in helmet impacts. Mips documents their 1996 proposal and the technology’s expansion across helmet brands. A Swedish standards body recognized the living co-founders’ work in November 2024.
What Hans did
co-created the Mips helmet slip-plane concept with Peter Halldin to reduce rotational motion transmitted to the brain
Why it matters
Mips became a widely licensed helmet-safety system, putting rotational-impact mitigation into cycling, snow, motorcycle, and other consumer helmets.
Living-status check
SIS reported von Holst’s recognition as a Mips founder and Karolinska professor emeritus in November 2024.
