Takanori Shibata invented PARO, a robotic baby seal with tactile sensors, motors and responsive behavior for therapeutic interaction. The manufactured robot provided a repeatable alternative to animal-assisted therapy and brought social-robot hardware into hospitals, care facilities and research on dementia support.
